Wines from Porto...
Port wine: the precious drink from vines built on the
terraces of the land of Douro. Its unshakeable fame, deep history and unique
characteristics make it one of the most desired wines in the world. Regardless
of your style, nobody is indifferent to a glass of Port wine, much less with
the Douro as the background landscape.
With a strong and distinct personality, Port wine has always
been associated with illustrious figures and historical events. He was drunk by
the Duke of Wellington before and after the Battle of Waterloo (1815) in
Belgium; Was taken to Brazil by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral, in the first
aerial crossing of the South Atlantic (1922), between Lisbon and Rio de
Janeiro. In the eighteenth century it was much appreciated by the Russian
empress Catherine, continuing to be part of several courts, as is the case of
the current British royalty.
Port wine acquires distinct characteristics due to the
unique conditions under which it is grown, both in terms of climate and in terms
of soil quality. In addition, unlike the other Douro wines, their fermentation
is interrupted, so that wine spirit is added, giving it more or less sweetness,
depending on the stop time. Its storage and the aging time are also factors
that make it an incomparable wine.
When drinking a goblet of Port wine we feel an intense aroma
and a taste or sweet or dry. Their color varies according to their age,
acquiring stronger shades as the years of aging advance. It is a wine with a
high alcohol content, between 19 and 22% vol.
Port wine can also be white (light or dry), with a lower
alcohol content (minimum of 16.5%), or Rosé. This wine of pink color is
obtained by means of the little intense maceration of the red grapes,
preventing the oxidation of the same ones. They are exuberant wines, which must
be drunk while new and fresh, and can be mixed in cocktails.
Port wine is divided into two styles: Ruby and Tawny. The
first ones are kept in bottles, keeping the color ink, the fruity aroma and the
vigor of the young wines. The latter age in hulls or casks, showing color
variations and a smell of nuts and wood.
In addition to the standard Ruby Port, there is Ruby
Reserve, which results from the selection of the best wines of each year,
combined to create a young and powerful wine. Porto Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)
is a high quality wine, bottled after four to six years of aging, ready to be
consumed at the time of purchase. The Vintage Port is one of the most
appreciated, being the only one that matures in bottle, between 10 to 50 years.
It is a wine of a single year, bottled two to three years after the harvest.
Its color and flavor evolve over the years, making it a more full-bodied wine.
Porto Single Quinta Vintage is a top wine, because it is a single year and
originates from a single vineyard.
The standard Tawny Port is aged in wooden vats, acquiring a
golden color. The Reserve is matured in oak wood, having a fruity aroma,
although more robust than its inferior wine. There are also the Tawny Port 10
years, 20 years, 30 years and 40 years, whose characteristics are changing
according to the aging period. As the years go by the wines get more intense,
complex, with aromas and deeper flavors like vanilla, hazelnuts, dried apricots
and honey. Porto Colheita is a Tawny of a single harvest, also aged in hoofs,
with characteristics that have changed over the years, originating different
ranges.
Port wine can also be Crusted, having a peculiarity that
leads to the formation of a crust on the wall of the bottle where it will be
aged for at least three years.
With a great diversity of aromas, flavors and prices, Port
wines will seduce any connoisseur of these fortified wines, which offer unique
sensory experiences.
