Eye-popping Landscapes...
Mountains and green valleys that intertwine with the river
Douro and its tributaries; Plains colored by almond blossoms; Unique animals
and rare plants ...
In the Douro there
are plenty of breathtaking landscapes, which change color according to the
season, painting pictures that are comparable to the most respected works of
art.
Following the course of the river Douro, we arrive at a
place where the waters are brighter and the air is more pure. On the hills
surrounding the golden river bed are terraces carved by the man's hand, from
which come the famous Port wine and the much appreciated table wines of the
Douro.
The Douro resembles a screen that changes color according to
the season, painted by the leaves and flowers of the various plantations. In
spring, when the almond trees bloom, white and violet blend with the green
leaves. Already in the autumn, the hills and valleys are covered by a mantle of
brown and copper.
The green of the vegetation contrasts with the brightness of
the waters of the various rivers and streams that meander through the region.
The River Sabor runs through wilderness without human intervention, the Côa
River encloses millennial treasures and the rivers Corgo, Tua, Távora and
Varosa embrace the heart of the wine region. Just a few examples of the dozens
of tributaries of the Douro that live with him in close harmony.
Among the vegetation and cliffs are hidden animals on the
verge of extinction, especially birds of prey, which draw their sustenance from
the waters of the river Douro or small rodents.
The Douro region, drought in summer and freezing in winter,
is full of contrasts - to add to the main crop of the vine, the almond and
olive trees are abundant and mark the local gastronomy, there are extensive
areas with wild soils populated by a Wild vegetation, and in fertile valleys
and plateaus are cultivated the most varied fruits and vegetables.
In the region there are also three areas of great
environmental importance, the Douro International Natural Park, the Alvão Natural
Park and the Azibo's Protected Landscape of Albufeira, which allow us to
explore in the middle of nature and discover viewpoints, waterfalls, springs,
River beaches, rare plants, wildlife and many other hidden treasures.
In the Douro region, nature has been able to adapt to the
working man's hands, as he has managed to preserve nature and keep its beauty
intact.
