Behind a Good Wine There is a Great Job
The fruit that gives rise to the wine is harvested during the
month of September, in a task in a way of celebration, where there is no lack
of good disposition and joy. Some farms allow the participation of tourists in
the harvest.
"It is not seen in what
way, this soil is capable of giving bread and wine. But it does. On the banks
of a river of gold, crucified between the heat of the sky that from above the
baby and the thirst of the bed that from below it dries, the walls of the
miracle are erected. On steep terraces, varadins that no palace, grows the
strains like the basil to the windows. In September, the men leave the
cold-ground banks and descend, in rogas, the staircase of the shale mill. They
sing, dance and work. Then they go up. And soon there is bottled sun to drink
the four corners of the world. "
(Miguel Torga, in Portugal)
In the month of September the terraces of the Douro fill with
people who gather the grapes to produce the world famous wine. After harvesting
the grapes these are deposited in wineries where they are crushed with people's
feet so that they can release their juice that will give rise to the wine.
While some walk the wine others encourage the party to sing to the sound of the
accordion touch and the strumming of the guitar strings.
Many of the vineyards, which hold the vast expanses of vines,
enable tourists to take part in the harvest, learn more about the region's
favorite fruit, and contribute to the production of some of the best wines in
the country. Once produced, it is time to prove the final result and prove what
our hands helped to make. During the rest of the year the farms remain open to
the public, contemplating it with various activities from the wine tasting to
the visit of the cellars and the vineyards.
