On the way to Spain, before crossing the frontier, the traveler is faced with a vastness of green and brown, colors echoed by the noise of the river waters, and the movement of the leaves, balanced by the wind. The Natural Park of the International Douro is the entrance to a world of charm, where Nature is queen and animal life its court.
In its extensive area are the counties of Mogadouro, Miranda do Douro, Figueira Castelo Rodrigo and Freixo de Espada à Cinta, important places for the Iberian wolf, species in the process of extinction. Other animals that can be found in the park are the wild boar, the buck and the Egyptian vulture. The rupicolous birds, like the Bonelli's eagle, are one of the main attractions of that enchanted place.
At the top of a mountain lies the Carrascalinho Viewpoint that allows you to observe the beings that dominate the Douro, among the green hills and the steep cliffs in the valley. Created only in 1988, the Natural Park of the International Douro is the area with the most important flora of the country, and one of the most outstanding at European level.
In the Serra do Alvão Natural Park, butterflies and dragonflies fly over flower beds that stretch across the plains. Near the river Olo you can hear the diving of the mole and otter in the crystal clear waters. In the middle of the dense vegetation you can see a person looking for his luck in a rare clover of four leaves.
In this park, located in the Serra do Alvão, created in 1983, there are also Iberian wolf packs, and birds of prey such as the royal eagle and the peregrine falcon. In all its extension, which covers the municipalities of Mondim de Bastos and Vila Real, there are waterfalls of various sizes, such as the Cascade of Agarez or the Cascade of Fisgas do Ermelo, which embellish the landscape.
